5% Cash Back Categories Chase Freedom

Every quarter, the Chase Freedom Card has a few categories that you can earn 5% cash back with up to $1,500. These categories change every 3 months and the $1,500 spend amount resets. Using this card to capitalize on that return is a great little boost and by adding the points earned to your Chase Sapphire Reserve or Preferred card makes your Ultimate Rewards points worth even more. This is an excellent card to have in your card portfolio and its a NO ANNUAL FEE card as well.

April-June 5% Freedom Cash Back Categories

The 5% cash back categories for the 2nd quarter with the Chase Freedom Card last from April 1st through June 30th will be Grocery stores and Fitness Clubs and Gym Memberships.

Spend on groceries or gyms to earn 5% back this quarter with Chase Freedom

Grocery Stores

There is a full list of approved Grocery stores compatible for the Chase Freedom Card to be found on the Chase Portal. But in general, this is a FAQ from Chase regarding what Stores count. Note that wholesalers like Sam’s Club, Costco, Target, Walmart, and Bj’s don’t count in the categories. So be mindful of that when making purchases. For those, use a card like the Chase Freedom Unlimited.

Buying Gift Cards at The Grocery Store With The Freedom

If you are someone like me and you don’t do a ton of shopping for food every week, you can still easily earn all of the points by BUYING GIFT CARDS at the grocery store. That still counts as a grocery store purchase with the Chase Freedom Card. Do you shop on Amazon? Of course you do! Go into the store and buy yourself amazon gift cards or gift cards that you know you are going to use. Now when you go and buy something on amazon, it’s like you are earning 5% back on your Amazon purchases instead of getting a smaller return with another card.

Gym Memberships and Fitness Clubs

This is a new category that I have not seen in the past but it is one that I am excited about since I do frequent my local Health Club. Here is what Chase has to say about this…

Massage therapy, dietary and weight management are not included with the Freedom Card

My gym I frequent has a bar in it, yeah, a BAR! It’s awesome! So I can technically use my chase freedom card to purchase an after workout protein smoothie or grab a beer and use my Freedom Card to earn the 5% cash back. Sad News is that health spas don’t seem to be included on this deal.

Benefits of Signing up for the Freedom Card

  • You get $200 cash back when you spend $500 in the first 3 months
This is the best sign-up bonus I have seen Chase Offer with the Freedom Card
  • A 0% APR for 15 months when you first open a Chase Freedom card account, so if you have a big purchase, this might be a good card to put that on.
  • Purchase protection for purchases up to 120 days and up to $500 per claim and $50,000 per account, along with extended manufacturer’s warranty, not to mention ZERO liability for fraud.
You are protected using your Chase Freedom Card

The Chase Freedom has ZERO annual fee
  • Earn 5% cash back on all LYFT rides.
  • Complimentary DoorDash Pass for 3 months and 50% off a membership after that with ZERO delivery Fees on orders over $12.
Get 5% Cash back with the Chase Freedom Card all year round with Lyft.

The Freedom card has some great benefits when you sign up for the Card.

Bottom Line

These are great spend categories to earn a good amount of return on your everyday spending and with the ability to combine these points earned to your Ultimate rewards Account it makes these points worth 20-50% more depending on what Sapphire card you have. Sapphire Preferred can make the points worth 20% more and the Sapphire Reserve can make the points worth 50% more.

All in all the Chase Freedom card that I will hold onto for a long time to come to keep earning rewards and because it has a zero annual fee.
