You have bought your ticket and you are now eagerly waiting for the day you will step foot on new ground. Whether it’s a jump to a nearby city or an escape to the other side of the world, for most, just traveling by plane seems like something less important in the whole story. It is best to shorten the travel time by sleeping – it also means that you will arrive at your destination rested. Below we give you a couple of important tips on how to sleep on the plane and other instructions for a nice flight.
Bring Sleeping Accessories With You On The Road
Bring a sleeping pillow with you on the road. They are usually very compact and practical, and they will not take up much space in your hand luggage. In addition to pillows, you should also bring earplugs. Not only it will help you not to hear other passengers talking and other sounds, but they are also great for preventing the creation of pressure in the ear. A sleeping mask can also be very useful on an airplane, as the light in an airplane is not (only) controlled by you.
Avoid Sugar and Alcohol
Avoid alcohol and sugar completely. If you think that alcohol will put you to sleep, it is usually only short-lived, and then you will wake up with a headache, a feeling of thirst and you will not be able to fall asleep anymore. If the flight lasts only 3 to 4 hours this approach can also help. But if you’re on a long-haul flight, alcohol use can be counterproductive. On the other hand, the intake of sugar in the body – if you sit for a long time and therefore do not spend a lot of energy, and then consume fatty or sweet foods, causes bloating. And you certainly don’t want that during the summer.
Dress Comfortably And In Many Layers
Comfortable and warm wardrobe is the best ally when trying to fall asleep on a plane. According to the temperature in the plane, take off or put on a sweater or a long-sleeved T-shirt. You probably won’t need a jacket, because – jackets are not a very comfortable piece of clothing when it comes to sleeping on a plane. The last thing you need is uncomfortable tightening and sweating from a thick jacket at the moment when you start falling asleep.
Do Not Cross Your Legs
When you cross your legs, you are practically leaning on one side, which can interfere with your blood pressure (and increase the chances of getting a blood clot if the flight lasts extremely long). If you fall asleep like this, your leg will surely numb, and when you have this unpleasant feeling, you will only cross your legs in the other direction in order to equalize the pressure in your legs and spine.
This is not good for your comfort, nor for your body. Feel free to lean against the window, but do not cross your legs. Keep them as straight as possible, as far as the seat in front of you allows. You can also bend them at an angle of 90 degrees.
Choose A Seat On The Plane Wisely And Sleep Better
Try to get a window seat. This way you will be able to lean against the wall, as well as control the curtains on the windows. The seats next to the aisle are used by passengers who are tall, because those seats allow them to place their legs more easily during the flight.
Keep In Mind That The Air In The Plane Is Dry
Always carry a bag with basic products such as hand cream, wet wipes, headphones, eye drops to keep your sinuses moist during the flight. The air in the plane is dry and can cause dryness in the throat, nose, eyes as well as dry skin.
