There’s plenty of historical places in the world to add to your bucket list, but deciding which ones are the best and where should you focus your time is hard to do. Some are more recent history though so it’s not all about the ancient world with old stones and ruins and I think there’s some difference here to the popular historical places lists that abound so I hope you like it. Happy Travels!
Stonehenge, England
Stonehenge began about 5,000 years ago as a simple earthwork enclosure where prehistoric people buried their cremated dead. The stone circle was erected in the centre of the monument in the late Neolithic period, around 2500 BC. It’s really a magical place but being overrun by tourists which just makes it less enjoyable. If you can, try and go early before the crowds or later, just before it closes.
Pyramids of Giza, Egypt
The Great Pyramid at Giza is the largest in the world, filling 13 acres at its base. Egyptologists believe the pyramid was built as a tomb. For the Fourth Dynasty Egyptian Pharaoh Khufu and was constructed over a 20-year period. There are smaller pyramids as part of the complex around, as well as many temples and the Great Sphinx which is world known as well. Giza is on the outskirts of Cairo which is well accessed by air. Once in Cairo it’s probably easiest to take a taxi to the pyramids
Auschwitz, Poland
The Auschwitz concentration camp , was one of over 40 concentration camps operated by Nazi Germany in Poland during World War II and the Holocaust. The Polish government has preserved the site . It’s a research centre and in memory of the 1.1 million people who died there, including 960,000 Jews. The nearest city to Auschwitz is Krakow and it’s about 65 kilometres from there. There are buses from the city. May not seem like a great place to visit by many but it’s an incredibly important historical site and one which changed the world.
Plymouth, Massachusetts USA
This is the site of the landing of the first pilgrims from Europe to what is now the United States of America. You can learn all about the people and what happened at the time through many museums in the town. Check out, a replica of the Plimouth Plantation , just outside of town . Near by, a replica of the Mayflower ship that they used to cross the Atlantic.
Jerusalem , Israel
Regardless of your religious beliefs, the city of Jerusalem is a historic place. The old town of Jerusalem has important and sacred buildings for all of the big three religions of Islam, Christianity and Judaism. Flights to Israel land at Tel Aviv and it’s fairly easy to get to Jerusalem from there by train, bus, tour or car rental. Must go check out Bethlehem. You will love your trip here, such a magical and spiritual place .
